I was installing a new RockShox Fork on my old 2003 GT Palomar and made a bone head move. I got distracted and tightened the stem before trying to set the preload on the headset bearings. I don't know if the fork came with a star nut that had a defect as I didn't believe I cranked down on it that hard before realizing the issue, but the nut that came with the fork failed.I did not want to order this many nuts, but looking at cost and shipping of a single, the chance that I may need another when I set my final steering head height, or the fact that I just may do something stupid again in the future. Now, I'm covered for whatever the future brings. They are all the same size and have the same thread. All is good.Depending on your mechanical level, you do not need to purchase the special tool to install them. I installed mine with a 7/16 deep socket. You can also make your own tool with bolts, washers etc.If you're installing a new fork, with a threadless headset like I was, I have two suggestions. Don't tighten your stem first, go brain dead then try to set your headset preload. Don't be in a hurry to cut your steering tube. Leave the tube full length and pick up a shim kit. In my case, I've moved my bar height 4 times and am almost done finding where I want them. The new position will be a good 20mm difference from how the bike was set up on the original fork from the factory.Good Luck and ride safe.
